Some of our favorite looks from the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards 2011 held at The Shrine Auditorium on January 30, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Let’s start off with some gorgeous white and off-white dresses, shall we?

And the winners are — Natalie Portman, who was named best actress for her performance in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, attended the 2011 SAG awards in a white Azzaro strapless gown which showed off her pregnant belly nicely. We prefer this look to the Viktor & Rolf she wore to the 2011 Golden Globes. Eva Longoria in a Georges Hobeika creation with plunging neckline, Winona Ryder in a strapless Alberta Ferretti ball gown and Lea Michele in a sleek Oscar de la Renta sheath (boy, does she know how to work a gown!).

The Wedding Attire

White Wedding Gown [1]

The white wedding gown is an icon. A long flowing is one of the first things that comes to mind. And yet, does have certain connotations of purity and innocence in our society, which may lead one to wonder if is is acceptable for all brides.

In case you do not know the origin it dates back to Queen Victoria in the 19th Century. Before then, brides wore a gown in the color of their choosing, and often it was not even a new dress, just their best dress. The idea that was designed to be worn only once was one of absolute luxury.

White Wedding Gown [2]

It has long had associations with purity; it is not only brides who wear white, after all, but also babies being baptized, children receiving their First Communion, and young ladies being introduced to society as debutantes. If you go back a few decades to the time when it was deemed mandatory for all first time brides to be virgins, then yes, white gowns were reserved for the young and innocent bride. If a woman who was known to be a "loose" woman, in the parlance of the day, there would surely have been quite a bit of nasty whispering going on behind her back. Needless to say, second time brides never wore white, favoring pastels like light blue or pale pink.

Times have changed, however, and there is no longer an expectation that a bride-to-be is saving herself for the honeymoon. That particular fiction is especially hard to maintain when the couple has been living together for five years before they tie the knot, and even more ludicrous when their children precede the bells. And yet, most first time brides will still wear white or ivory gowns. Besides, etiquette would dictate that making rude comments about the bride is a far greater sin than her choice of gown color.

White Wedding Gown [3]

So, the answer is yes, it is certainly fine for a first time bride to wear the gown of her choosing, in white or any color that she likes. (Because the corollary being acceptable for any bride is that no bride should be required to wear white, if she favors another color.) That said, older first time brides or those being remarried will often consider wearing ivory or champagne colored wedding dresses instead of pure white. Not only will they avoid any comments about the state of their purity, but these colors tend to be more flattering, elegant, and sophisticated.

If a second time bride does decide, she should aim to find one that is more mature and chic, rather than the sort of princess-like gown that would be suitable on a young ingenue. Slim silhouettes and form fitting styles are very elegant in white and will look more appropriate. Even in a lovely silk could work, especially when it is accessorized with classic pearl bridal jewelry. A little tip for any second time brides: do not re-wear the same bridal jewelry that you did for your first ceremony; it is better to treat yourself to a new pearl necklace that will not be a reminder of the previous day.

Really, ladies, these days almost anything goes when it comes to wedding attire. The bride can wear white, red, or even black, if it suits her personal style. Although it has many long associations in our culture, in the end, the color white is just a color, and can be worn by any bride who wishes to do so. [via]

Wedding Gown .. Modest Style

1-Modest-Wedding-Gown

If you've set foot inside of a formalwear department store or a nationwide bridal retailer lately, you know how difficult it is to find wedding and bridesmaids gowns that come anywhere close to satisfying higher standards of modesty. Modest brides need to eliminate a lot of dresses from the running at first glance. So how do they select the best one from the remaining acceptable choices?

Contrary to what a lot of fashion designers seem to think, there are thousands of flattering styles and designs of modest gowns for brides and bridesmaids. It all depends on your budget, your colors and theme, and of course your body type. Learn which modest fit you best and how to find a gown that is both modest and stylish. Then pair them with just the right veil, shoes, and accessories to wrap it all together into your perfect bridal ensemble for you.

Even in the dead of winter, it's truly difficult to find even one in the formalwear or bridal section of most retailers. Most women's formalwear is strapless or backless with a plunging neckline. The irony is that dresses with a little more coverage are actually more flattering for the majority of body types out there! Regardless of whether or not it makes sense, the fact is that any bride is going to have a difficult time finding a gown - so she might as well know what to do about the situation.

Specialty Stores

LDS brides who live in areas with a large concentration of other Latter-day Saints usually have an easier time finding LDS Gowns that suit them for their Mormon. Specialty LDS retailers cater solely to Mormon brides who don't want to bend their standards of modesty for their LDS Temple day. Even brides who don't live in Utah but want to chose from a selection of LDS Gowns often make a special LDS dress shopping trip to Provo or Salt Lake City. That extra expense of the travel cost must be added to and incuded in their LDS dress budget.

Online Formalwear Retailers

Even if you live in an area with little modest selection and don't want to travel, you're not completely out of luck. The Internet can be your best friend in shopping. LDS specialty stores may physically reside in Utah and Idaho, but they have an online presence everywhere in the world. Regular formalwear stores also have a larger selection online than you see in the showroom, so you may want to check those out, too to find more LDS Gowns to choose from for the perfect one.

Chain Formal and Bridal Stores

Don't discount the possibility of finding a dress at a non-LDS formalwear or bridal store. You may luck out and fall in love with a modest wedding gown that they carry, or you may find a gown that can be altered for modesty by adding sleeves or a chemise underneath. Talk to the salespeople about your needs and see if they can help you. It may be that they carry "less popular" dresses with sleeves in the warehouse and just need to order them in your size.

Bridal Gown + Halter V Neck

When it comes to finding a bridal gown, there are a number of beautiful options to choose from. Different styles and neckline options allow brides-to-be to choose a dress that perfectly fits their own personal style and body type, ensuring that they have the perfect one for their special day. If you're a bride-to-be, take a look at this simple overview for some helpful descriptions.

A-Lin

An A-line is a classic choice that flatters many body types. Beautiful and elegant, the silhouette of this dress resembles the letter "A." Starting with a close-fitting top, the A-line dress gradually flares out as it goes down the skirt, with the widest part at the bride's feet.

Ball Gowns

Ball gowns are dramatic and carry a special air of romance. These dresses feature a fitted bodice with a full skirt, which usually consists of several voluminous layers. Many women choose a ball gown style gown because it harks back to the fairytales they loved as little girls.

Dropped Waist

Dropped waist is chic and contemporary. This dress has a long, fitted torso with the waist cinched close to the hips. Dropped waist designs can vary from simple and elegant to intricate and detailed. Many women who want to showcase their hourglass figures choose dropped waist as they naturally create this silhouette. This may not be the best choice for pear-shaped women, or those with a higher natural waist.

Empire Waist

A classic design, the empire waist cinches just below the bust. This timeless dress has a short torso with the skirt beginning close to the ribcage. Though empire waists are commonly featured in dresses with full skirts, they can also be used in relatively straight dresses for a slender, streamline silhouette. As with ball gowns, empire waist dresses are popular among women who want to capture a bit of old-world style that's reminiscent of romantic fairytales.

Trumpet Fit

Present an exceptionally beautiful silhouette. These head-turning dresses are relatively form-fitting through the torso and hips, and then begin to flare out around mid-thigh. This creates a very flattering shape and provides enough room around the legs to walk comfortably. Like the dropped waist gown, trumpet fit dresses might not be the most flattering choice for pear-shaped women. Trumpet fit bridal gowns are sometimes referred to as "fit-to-flare" dresses.

Pullsera Wedding Gown

Strapless

The material of the bodice provides support instead of straps. Gowns that feature a strapless design often use a more sturdy material in the bodice and may be boned like a corset. This is an excellent option for women with a small to medium bust size. But women with a bigger chest may need the additional support that straps provide. Many strapless gowns will also feature beadwork or other embellishments to make the bodice sturdier and to accent the cut of the dress.

Scoop Neckline

Feature a gradual curve from the shoulders to the bust, showing off the shoulders while still having a tasteful and elegant look. Scoop necklines are available with a number of different styles. They're even found on some strapless in the form of a gradual scooped section at the top of the bodice. Some scoop necklines may also feature variations on the scoop design, still presenting a gradual neckline but without the smooth semi-circular cutout of standard scoop designs.

V-Neckline

Contrary to scoop necklines, v-neckline gowns have a sharper and narrower neck that comes to a point in the middle of the bust. The depth of the neckline can vary from one dress to the next and depends largely on the design of the bodice. V-necks can be traditional and modest, or they can be bold and reveal a bit more skin, depending on the bride's taste. The overall plunge of the v-neck design may be partially concealed with the use of lace or scalloping in the bodice, creating a unique and beautiful design.

Sleeves

There are a number of different sleeve designs that can be included in a gown design. Short cap sleeves, full-length lace sleeves, and even half or three-quarter sleeves can create a unique look for a beautiful dress. Some dresses even have detachable sleeves so that they can be customized depending on the bride's preferences. [via]

The most beautiful moment for a woman is her wedding. At that time, bride should be the most beautiful lady. So, how to choose a right choice will be very important. As an old saying goes: Clothes make a man just as a saddle makes a horse. Your appearance is born but dress can make you pretty.

Before you look around and begin your treasure hunter trip, do your research first. In case of being cheated by sales person, you should learn some knowledge about gowns, such as what material and types of gowns. You can learn the knowledge from some bridal magazines, or surf the internet to find useful information. Do not go to the shops without knowing anything it.

After learning bridal gowns knowledge, you may have some ideas about the silhouettes. There are four types according to their silhouettes: Ball gown looks pretty and fits for every woman but it has a drawback: it usually has crinolines to support the shape of gown, so it is heavier than other types of gowns. A-line have a fitted bodice from the waist and forms an "A" shape. Brides who think ball gowns are inconvenient can choose A-line gown to replace. Sheaths dress makes bride look like a mermaid. It fits for women who have slim and balanced statures, but bride who has big thighs or bottom should not choose this silhouette. The last type is called empire waist gown. It has a skirt that falls below the breasts and it is excellent for pregnant bride. This tape of gowns provides extra room in the waist and brides will feel comfortable.

After choosing, try it on and find the right size for yourself. There are two circumstances: buy or rent it. If you are going to buy it, choose your favorite one and ask the tailor to modify it until the gown fits for you perfectly. But, if you are going to rent it, you might have to be careful to find the right size.

There are some other conditions that you should also consider. For example, it's better to wear floor length gowns and long trains in formal , and you can choose to wear a demitoilet without a train in informal ceremonies. Different seasons call for different dresses. All this must according to the actual situation.

At last, don't forget your budget! Even its important in your life, you should know that gowns are different from other clothes because you'll wear it only once or twice, and it's unnecessary to just purchase the high price. [via]

Wedding Gown | Cheap Price

Cheap-Wedding-Gown

You will often see the moniker "cheap wedding gown". Just what's considered a cheap , and are they bad dresses all the time, sometimes, or not at all?

Start with price. Basically, a gown can be anything that costs $1,000 or less. That may seem high still, but it depends on the dress, the designer, and where you're buying it from. For instance, if your purchasing a Vera Wang that's 5 years old and it costs you $1,000, whereas buying one new would have cost you $3,800, then by definition that's a cheap. It's still quality, but it's obviously not new anymore, and may have had more than one owner, so it has lost some of its value.

White Wedding Gown, Red Sash

The next thing to consider are the materials used to make them. There are plenty of knockoff that follow the patterns of top designers that might be made of materials that aren't of the same quality that the big designers will use. Maybe instead of silk organza is made of some type of cotton or even satin. Maybe the embroidery isn't all that fancy. Or maybe someone has used beads instead of Swarovski crystals. These types of things would make the dresses cheaper, but not necessarily bad, worthless dresses. They would still look fabulous; they would just cost a lot less.

Something else that helps create is that some designers contract with shops and stores to create multiple copies of lesser designs, which brings the price down. This allows for someone to be able to say they have a designer dress without having to pay top price for it. Most customers know these aren't the top of the line dresses, especially if they're brand new, because today's savvy customer has looked online and seen the top designs on their favorite designer's websites. But they're still happy to have a dress that followed the pattern of a top designer.

QL-W200 ; Ivory Wedding Gown

Overall, cheap doesn't always mean badly made. Of course there are some badly made dresses, but you won't usually find those on discount dress sites. Where you'll find those dresses are at sites where someone offers to make a designer dress for under $400 based on a designer's pattern. To make a profit, they may skip steps, including complete stitching to make sure the dresses are reinforced. [via]
